A Day At Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Hello Friends!

Some months ago, me and my husband wanted to quit a bit with the chaos of Manhattan, and we decided to visit a botanical Garden. In New York city there are two main botanical gardens, The Brooklyn Botanical Garden and The Bronx one. We chose the Brooklyn Botanical Garden because, after the garden’s visit, we could have a walk at Prospect park, we could visit the Brooklyn Zoo or the Brooklyn Museum and, we could also have a dinner in Brooklyn Neighborhood.

So today, I’m going to bring all of you with me in this adventure and I’ll show you a new piece of New York City! Let’s start!

Some Historical Facts

The Brooklyn Botanical Garden was born in 1897, when the New York City’s government decided to dedicate 39 acres to a new botanical garden (almost 158.000 square meters). In 1911 there was the grand opening of the Garden.

In 1928 the Rose Garden was built and now there you can find hundreds species of roses. Some of the roses planted in 1928 are still alive and you can see them today in the garden.cherry-blossom-esplanade

In 1915 the Japanese Garden was born and it was one of the first Japanese gardens of the United States.

In 1941 the cherry esplanade  was set. It is an amazing walkway surrounded by cherry trees and, when they are in blossom period, during April, everything become pink and it is amazing.

These are only some facts about the garden and also thanks to them the garden is become the one we can see today. The garden is continuously growing in dimension (now it is 52 acres large almost 210.000 square meters) and also In pavilions and number of plants. Indeed, as you can see in the map, there are always works in progress till today. For example, the dark green area  is currently under constructions and it will be the house of the Family Plant Collection (number 5 area in the map).gardenmap

What can you do after a visit at Brooklyn Botanical Garden?

Really close to the Garden there are few attractions like: Brooklyn Zoo, Prospect Park and Brooklyn museum.

What I loved most of Brooklyn Botanical Garden

  • Japanese garden;
  • Roses’ garden;
  • Magnolia plaza (even if they are not in blossom during my visit);
  • The aquatic house and orchid collection;
  • The 3 pavilions dedicated to three different area: desert pavilion, Warm pavilion and tropical pavilion;
  • Bonsai museum.

Following a short movie with some of the pics I took during my visit. I visited the Garden in May so, although I lost the cherry trees blossom period, I could appreciate mostly the rose garden, because as you probably know, in may the roses are in their best period.

We arrived really early, so after the visit to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, we decided to visit the Brooklyn Zoo as well. Actually I was a little bit disappointed about the zoo, it is nothing special and in my opinion, it is a children zoo… nothing compared the Bronx Zoo (here the link to my post about my experience at the Bronx Zoo). For completing our day we had a walk In Prospect Park and in Brooklyn neighborhood and at last an awesome hamburger at Shake Shack (here my post in which I talk about this famous restaurant).

I hope you enjoy this virtual tour of Brooklyn Botanical Garden! I hope that this post can be useful for those of you who plan a visit in New York City.

See you soon with new adventures!
